An interest in sustainable creation and environmental preservation underly my engagement with waste—that is materials that no longer serve their defined purpose, whether it be humanmade by-products or spent organic matter—as material resources in the series of Material Glaze Tests On Ceramics, and in the related projects Material Ink Tests On Watercolour Paper and Material Ink Tests On Cotton Fabric.

Material Glaze Tests On Ceramics is excerpted from an ongoing series of raw material ceramic tests using many of the same, and many very different substances as in Material Ink Tests.
I experienced intimate relationships between these materials as I become familiar with their personalities within the context that I tested them. I questioned how they will respond to various substrates, applications, and environments, seen in the differences resulting between marks on watercolour paper and cotton fabric, then translated to clay high-fired in a reduction atmosphere.
Each set of series, defined by their substrate, encapsulates a micro-climate of characteristics learned through experimentation.
